After the wedding of Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer and the furore it created NSW Opposition Leader, Luke Foley, has declared that he would see real estate agents and developers banned from being local area councilors.
Further to this Mr Foley would also see political donations and spending capped in council elections.
Mr Mehajer’s wedding has brought to light his ability to vote on matters potentially benefiting him.
In 2012 law was changed to allows councillors with a vested interest to vote on planning controls as long as they declare their interest. Mr Foley would see this reversed.
Labor has banned property developers from standing for preselection at a local, state or federal government level under then prime minister Kevin Rudd’s 2013 intervention in the NSW branch.
